5. Can I cancel a class if I know I cannot attend?

This is not a problem, but 24 hrs notice is required to allow the teachers to adjust their schedule as necessary. Generally if less than 24 hrs notice is given, the teacher will have to charge for the lesson.

6. If I don’t like the teacher, how can I change teachers?

It is understandable that there may be occasions where you and your teacher do not seem to understand each other. Fortunately STKC has multiple teachers on staff and generally a change can be facilitated quickly.

7. Is it better to learn in the classroom or in private training?

Generally speaking, students learn more quickly in private training because they spend most of the lesson speaking Thai with the teacher. However the classroom sessions allow students to sit and listen also while the teacher is conversing with another student providing a different type of learning experience. Both methods work well and the choice of private vs. classroom is dependant upon the student.

8. How many lessons will it take before I can speak confidently with the taxi driver?

You should have no problem speaking with a taxi driver after completing the first package of 10 lessons. The length of time it takes to complete this package is dependant upon your schedule and teacher availability. In general, a 10 lesson package of private instruction will require about 4 weeks. In the classroom, this could be as short as two weeks.

9. How long does it take to learn to read Thai?

Reading Thai is often considered more difficult by students because it requires learning a new alphabet. But after the second lesson package, you should be able to begin reading simple Thai “easy reader” books.

10. How many students are there in the classroom sessions?

There are a maximum of 5 students in each class. This number is necessary to allow the teacher to devote an appropriate amount of time with each student.

11. Do I have to take tests or quizzes during my training?

Testing is a normal part of the learning process with STKC. These are necessary for the student to understand what has and has not been learned and for the teacher to allow further improvement in the lesson programs and focus for future lessons.

12. Is homework part of the training?

The use of homework is dependent upon the students needs. Homework tends to make the progression faster through the lesson packages. However it is understood that often other commitments can make this too great a burden on the student’s time. When homework is not used, additional review becomes necessary at the beginning of each class session.

13. If I take your classes, will I become a fluent Thai speaker?

The lessons provide the necessary foundation to become a fluent Thai speaker. Experience has shown that those students who regularly use the language skills learned in the classroom become fluent much faster. Therefore all the teachers at STKC regularly remind students to speak Thai with their friends and coworkers.

14. How long are the classes each day?

Classes range from 90 minutes to two hours depending on whether it is individual or group instruction. The longer classes work well in a group setting because the student can listen to the questions and discussion between other students and the instructor. Regardless of the length of the classes, it is important for the student to realize that learning a new language can be tiring and your ability to retain what has been taught diminishes as the classes get longer.

15. How many classes can I take in one day?

This is entirely up to the student, depending upon teacher availability. See also the answer to question number 14.

16. Do you offer immersion training?

At the present time full immersion training is not offered. However a large percentage of the discussion that occurs in the classes is in Thai. This has a similar effect and helps to develop quick translation skills.
